Colville 2000 & Beyond Airport
Study Committee
FINAL SUMMARY REPORT, FEBRUARY 2010
Summary Statement of Need
Sample Criteria & Issues for Relocated
Airport Environmental Assessment
Proposed Statement of Need for
Colville Airport Relocation
Public Safety:
Improved safety for airport users and the surrounding
community is needed. The current site does not meet FAA
safety or siting standards.
Due to development around it, the current site is
aeronautically unsuitable to:
·
Meet expanded future operational demands
·
Allow for improved critical emergency and disaster
services
·
Greatly improve response time for wild land fire
suppression and medical evacuation
Economic/Social Impacts:
The Growth Management and Comprehensive plans along with
the geography of the area indicate the area east of town
as the highest and best use for new residential and
supporting development. Relocation of the airport opens
this land for natural development of the community.
Northeastern Washington has been adversely affected by the
current economic downturn. Significant public works
projects have a history of providing an infusion of money
and jobs in the short term. The Comprehensive Plan states
than an airport is a “critical part in the economic
viability of this rural community”. In the long term, a
relocated general aviation airport would allow and support
business employment and commerce and move goods and
services. Additional space adjacent to the airport is
needed to expand the economic viability of this area. Any
economic development associated with the airport is now
restricted by the current footprint.
A
relocated airport meets the City’s mission statement:
Forward Looking.
Aviation:
As stated in the LATS study, there is a need to meet the
projected capacity for aviation. A general aviation
airport:
·
Supports business employment and commerce
·
Moves people and goods
·
Promotes quality of life
·
Provides access for critical emergency and disaster
services
The current airport cannot meet these projected demands.
